For a late Mother's Day present I took my mom to the sourdough bread class today that my mother-in-law and I took together a couple of years ago. My mom and I had taken a tamale class from this same gal, so I knew that she would enjoy another baking experience there. The class started with a few appetizers before getting started on the sourdough bread and pizza dough for our lunch.
Besides my mom and I, my co-worker Curtis (on the right with the Hawaiian shirt) and his wife Kathy (who works with my mom at the hospital) were there as well as another couple from the hospital that my mom also knew.
Pizzas always taste better when baked on a heart shaped crust, don't you think? Sherry (the head baker) had lots of delicious ingredients to choose from including my favorite - artichoke hearts.
After lunch we learned how to shape our sourdough into bread loaves.
Next it was time for the apple stromboli dessert! Leftover pizza dough filled with sweetened cream cheese and canned apple pie filling seasoned with a healthy helping of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Glazed with egg and raw sugar and then baked off in the outdoor bread oven and served with ice cream. Heaven! Finally it was time to bake the sourdough bread loaves for us to take home.
Then there was a little time to sit and visit for about 20 minutes while they baked.
Eventually the magically delicious loaves were pulled out and left to cool for us to bring home.
We had a great day and this time I made sure not to leave my loaf on the top of my car as I drove away!

Was your gift to try to assassinate Mom with carbs? You can't win "favorite daughter" if the judge is in a diabetic coma.
Maybe not, but at least I'd be able to steal her loaf of sourdough!
My mouth is watering as I remember how wonderful that pizza was and how incredibly sour the bread was. That was a great time with you that I will always cherish.
